  • Author: Zoe
  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

Sloppy Joe Casserole is a comforting and flavorful dish that takes the classic Sloppy Joe sandwich concept and transforms it into a hearty casserole. Ground beef is simmered with tomato sauce, ketchup, and spices, then topped with biscuit dough and melted cheese for a satisfying meal perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced

Sauce and Seasonings

  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Topping

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice)
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough (8 biscuits)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Cook Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Sauté Vegetables: Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are tender, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Make Sauce: Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Let the mixture simmer gently for about 5 minutes to blend flavors.
  5. Assemble Casserole: Pour the beef mixture into a casserole dish and spread it evenly to form a base layer.
  6. Prepare Biscuit Topping: Open the can of biscuit dough and cut each biscuit into four pieces. Distribute the biscuit pieces evenly over the beef mixture.
  7. Add Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the biscuit dough pieces.
  8. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until biscuits are golden brown and cooked through, and cheese is melted.
  9. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly for a few minutes before serving to let the casserole set.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey for ground beef for a leaner version.
  • Bell pepper can be replaced with diced green chilies for a spicier twist.
  • Use your favorite cheese blend to customize flavor, such as mozzarella or pepper jack.
  • Serve with a side salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven.
