Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the yeast with half of the warmed water (heated to 110°F). Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Mix Butter, Sugar, and Salt: In a large bowl, place the thinly sliced butter, sugar, and kosher salt together to prepare the base for the dough.
  3. Add Remaining Water: Pour the remaining warm water into the butter mixture. Allow this to sit while the yeast continues to activate, blending flavors and softening the butter.
  4. Combine Mixtures: After 5 minutes, whisk the butter and water mixture until it is somewhat combined smoothly.
  5. Add Egg Yolk and Yeast: Add the lightly beaten egg yolk and the foamy yeast mixture into the bowl with the butter mixture, then stir in the flour until just incorporated into a dough.
  6. Prepare Baking Dish: Brush a 9×13 inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of melted butter to prevent sticking and add flavor.
  7. Shape Dough: Spread the dough evenly in the prepared baking dish. Cover it tightly with plastic wrap and let it rest for 15 minutes to allow the dough to relax and rise slightly.
