			Bread and Fruit
- 6 cups cubes brioche bread
- 2 cups sliced peaches
Custard Mixture
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- Pinch salt
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) to prepare for baking the casserole.
- Prepare Baking Dish: Butter or spray an 8×8 or 9×9 inch baking dish to prevent sticking and layer the bottom with half of the brioche bread cubes.
- Add Peaches: Scatter half of the sliced peaches evenly over the bread cubes to create the first fruit layer.
- Layer Again: Repeat the layering process by adding the remaining bread cubes and topping them with the rest of the sliced peaches.
- Mix Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until fully combined and smooth.
- Combine: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the layered bread and peaches to saturate all the bread cubes.
- Toss Gently: Gently toss the mixture within the dish to ensure the bread is evenly soaked in the custard without disturbing the layers too much.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour, or until the casserole is golden brown on top, set in the center, and no liquid remains at the bottom.
- Serve: Slice the casserole into squares and serve hot, optionally with your favorite toppings such as maple syrup, powdered sugar, or whipped cream.
Notes
- The brioche bread is ideal for its rich texture and flavor but you can substitute with challah or thick-cut white bread.
- Using slightly under-ripe peaches helps maintain texture during baking.
- For a dairy-free alternative, substitute cream and milk with coconut milk or almond milk.
- Letting the casserole sit for 10-15 minutes after baking can help it set more firmly for easier slicing.
- Optional toppings include fresh berries, chopped nuts, or a drizzle of honey for added texture and sweetness.
