Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Filling

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

Frosting

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, active dry yeast, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the warm whole milk, melted unsalted butter, large egg, red food coloring, and vanilla extract until fully blended.
  3. Form the Dough: Gradually combine the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and knead the mixture into a soft, elastic dough, either by hand or using a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook.
  4. First Rise: Cover the dough with a clean cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size, approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
  5. Prepare Filling: In a bowl, mix the softened butter, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon until smooth and well combined to form the filling.
  6. Roll Out Dough: On a floured surface, roll the risen dough into a rectangle about 16 by 12 inches.
  7. Spread Filling and Add Chocolate Chips: Evenly spread the cinnamon-sugar butter mixture over the rolled dough, then sprinkle the mini chocolate chips evenly over the filling.
  8. Shape Rolls: Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log shape. Slice the log into 12 equal rolls.
  9. Second Rise: Place the rolls into a greased baking dish, cover, and allow them to rise again until puffy, about 30 to 45 minutes.
  10. Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25 to 30 minutes or until they are soft, golden, and fully cooked through.
  11. Make Frosting: Beat together the softened cream cheese and butter until creamy and smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and 2 to 4 tablespoons of milk until the frosting reaches a spreadable consistency.
  12. Frost and Serve: Spread the cream cheese frosting onto the warm rolls right after baking. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture experience.

Notes

  • The dough should be kneaded well to develop gluten, which ensures soft, fluffy rolls.
  • Use whole milk warmed to around 110°F to help activate the yeast properly.
  • Adjust the amount of red food coloring to achieve your preferred vibrant red hue.
  • For extra richness, ensure the butter and cream cheese are completely softened before mixing the frosting.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
  • Reheat rolls gently in the microwave or oven before serving to restore softness.
