Scale
Cake Ingredients
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- 1 ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs (room temperature)
- 1 cup whole milk (or buttermilk)
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Frosting Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
- ¼ cup milk or cream
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two round baking pans to ensure the cake doesn’t stick.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to combine evenly.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, milk (or buttermilk), vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Mix Batter: Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring just until blended. Avoid overmixing to keep the cake light and tender.
- Bake the Cake: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool the Cakes: Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
- Prepare the Frosting: Beat the unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with the milk or cream, and beat until smooth and spreadable.
- Frost the Cake: Once the cakes are completely cool, spread the frosting evenly between the layers and over the top and sides of the cake. Serve and enjoy.
Notes
- Use room temperature eggs and butter for best mixing results.
- To make buttermilk substitute, add 1 tbsp of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of milk and let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Ensure cakes are completely cool before frosting to prevent melting the frosting.
- You can store the cake covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
- For a richer flavor, try adding a teaspoon of espresso powder to the batter.
