  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

  • Blue food coloring (amount as desired for desired blue shade)

Cinnamon Filling

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup softened butter

Blue Frosting

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Blue food coloring (amount as desired)

Topping

  • Crushed chocolate chip cookies
  • Mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine warm milk, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Let the mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is activated.
  2. Prepare the dough: Add melted butter, egg, salt, and blue food coloring to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the all-purpose flour, mixing well until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl and cover it. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until the dough doubles in size.
  5. Roll the dough: After the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick on a floured surface.
  6. Add filling: Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, then sprinkle the brown sugar and ground cinnamon evenly on top.
  7. Roll and cut: Starting from one edge, roll the dough tightly into a log and cut it into 9 to 12 evenly sized rolls.
  8. Second rise: Place the cut rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Bake: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the rolls for 20 to 25 minutes or until they turn golden brown on top.
  10. Prepare frosting: In a bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and blue food coloring until the frosting is smooth and evenly colored.
  11. Decorate: Spread the blue frosting over the warm cinnamon rolls. Sprinkle crushed chocolate chip cookies and mini chocolate chips on top for the iconic Cookie Monster look.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for a more vibrant and intense blue color.
  • Do not overheat the milk or it may kill the yeast, preventing the dough from rising properly.
  • Allow the rolls to cool slightly before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting too much.
