  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: About 6 cups of Cake Batter Puppy Chow 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Cake Batter Puppy Chow is a sweet and colorful snack mix featuring crispy Rice Chex cereal coated in a luscious white chocolate butter mixture, infused with almond and vanilla extracts, then tossed with sprinkles and powdered sugar for a festive, crunchy treat that’s perfect for parties or an everyday indulgence.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 4 and ½ cups (135g) Rice Chex® cereal
  • ⅔ cup (134g) sprinkles
  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar

Wet Ingredients

  • ¼ cup (57g) unsalted butter (cut into 8 slices)
  • 8 ounces (227g) high quality white chocolate
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cereal: Pour the Rice Chex cereal into a large mixing bowl and set it aside to be coated later.
  2. Melt butter and chocolate: In a medium saucepan over low heat, gently melt the unsalted butter, white chocolate, almond extract, and vanilla extract while stirring constantly until the mixture is smooth and completely melted. Remove the pan from heat to prevent burning.
  3. Coat the cereal: Immediately pour the melted white chocolate mixture over the cereal in the bowl. Stir very gently and thoroughly to ensure all cereal pieces are evenly coated with the chocolate mixture.
  4. Add sprinkles: Transfer the coated cereal into a large zip-top bag or container with a tight-fitting lid. Add the sprinkles and shake vigorously until the sprinkles are evenly dispersed throughout the coated cereal.
  5. Coat with powdered sugar: Add the powdered sugar to the bag or container, then shake again until all the cereal pieces are fully coated, giving it that signature puppy chow powdered finish.
  6. Cool and store: Spread the finished mixture onto a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper to cool and set. Once cool, discard any excess powdered sugar and store the puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.

Notes

  • Use high quality white chocolate for the best flavor and smooth coating.
  • Be careful melting white chocolate over low heat to avoid burning or seizing.
  • Make sure to shake well after adding sprinkles and powdered sugar to evenly distribute and coat the cereal.
  • This snack keeps well for up to a week when stored in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • Feel free to customize with different sprinkles or add-ins like mini marshmallows or nuts if desired.
