Description

Apple Dapple Cake is a moist, spiced cake loaded with tender apple chunks and topped with a rich, buttery glaze. This delightful dessert blends warm cinnamon and nutmeg flavors with the natural sweetness of apples, creating a comforting treat perfect for fall or anytime you crave a homemade apple cake.

Ingredients

Scale

Cake

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups vegetable oil
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 large eggs
  • 4 cups apples (peeled and chopped into ½-inch chunks)

Glaze

  • ⅓ cup butter
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar (packed)
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup heavy cream
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan thoroughly with non-stick cooking spray and set it aside to prepare the batter.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside for later use.
  3. Cream Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer on medium speed to beat the vegetable oil with the granulated sugar and brown sugar until well combined. Then add the vanilla extract. Beat in the eggs individually, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next.
  4. Combine Dry and Wet Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture into the wet ingredients a little at a time, mixing thoroughly between each addition. The batter will be quite thick at this stage.
  5. Fold in Apples: Using a sturdy wooden spoon, gently fold in the peeled and chopped apple chunks until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  6. Bake the Cake: Spread the batter evenly into the prepared 9×13-inch pan. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 50 to 60 minutes. The cake is done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Prepare the Glaze: While the cake bakes, combine the butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract in a medium saucepan. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently until it simmers. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.
  8. Glaze the Cake: Once the cake is out of the oven and still warm, pour the prepared glaze evenly over the top to soak in the delicious buttery sweetness.
  9. Serve: Allow the cake to cool slightly, then slice and serve warm or at room temperature for a comforting dessert.

Notes

  • Be sure to use tart apples like Granny Smith for a nice balance of sweetness and tartness.
  • If you prefer, you can substitute half the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a nuttier flavor.
  • Ensure the glaze is still warm when poured over the cake for best absorption.
  • This cake can be stored covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerated for up to a week.
  • Reheat slices briefly in the microwave or oven for a fresh-baked feel.
